If you are not familiar with the country of Belize, it is located in Central America just south of Mexico. English, the national language, is taught in all schools. It is a relatively new country by history’s standards. Part of the country’s struggle includes poverty and a poor standard of living for many of its inhabitants, especially in the southern Toledo District. Punta Gorda city is a small seaside community within the Toledo District where the mission efforts of St. Peter Claver Parish, which is supported by the Jesuits, is focused on education and spiritual growth along with social and economic outreach. The Jesuits in Belize have a long history of fostering and supporting the work of colleagues and volunteers in mission with the people of Punta Gorda.
